Happy holidays + 5 top sustainable tips

Welcome to our December newsletter, the last one for 2023! Recently on the blog, we’ve shared some of our favorite tips for sustainable ways to decorate for the festive season, from upcycling old ornaments to sustainable gift-giving. We also share 10 ways to be an eco-friendly student.

As we approach the festive season it’s easy to get carried away with buying gifts, with the average person spending around $830 according to a Gallup poll. Here are some handy hints to help you avoid overconsumption and stay sustainable this year. Remember every little action counts and it all adds up.

1 - Try DIY gift wrapping
Instead of buying new wrapping paper, use old newspapers, magazines, or fabric scraps to wrap your gifts. This not only reduces waste but also saves money on expensive gift wraps. Try our handy blog on creating crackers or gift boxes using our empty toilet roll tubes.

2 - Give plantable greeting cards
Consider sending plantable cards that contain seeds. Once the Christmas cards get taken down at the end of the festive season, they can plant them, and they will grow into flowers or herbs.

3 - Try second-hand shopping
Explore thrift stores or online platforms for second-hand decorations, ornaments and even gifts. You'll find unique items at a fraction of the cost, and it's a sustainable choice.

4 - Host a potluck
If you're hosting a holiday gathering, consider organising a potluck. This way, the burden of cooking and expenses is shared among the guests, and there's less food waste.

5 - Enjoy free activities
Trips to the beach, walks in nature, homemade picnics, playing board games, baking with the kids and watching festive movies are all great ways to feel the holiday fun and they cost little or nothing. Check out events in your area such as carol singing and free outdoor films and get connected to your community.
