Five sustainable New Year's resoultions
As we look ahead to the New Year and the obligatory resolutions, here are some simple tips that will help you decrease your carbon footprint.
1 - Say no to single use
Ditching plastic straws and coffee cups is a great way to help the planet. Bring a reusable coffee cup with you or enjoy a relaxing few minutes sitting in a café with your favourite drink rather than opting for takeaway. Even going ‘topless’ – getting your coffee without the plastic lid – will help make a difference.
2 - Try a no-spend challenge
No-spend days or even months – dare we say a year! – can vastly cut down on your consumption and ecological footprint, as well as saving you a ton of money. Pare down to the essentials – mortgage or rent, bills, food and transport – and give yourself a break from discretionary spending. You’ll be amazed how much you can save.
3 - Make sustainable swaps
While there are plenty of great eco-alternatives to everything from toothbrushes to containers and clothing, don’t feel you need to rush out and replace everything in your household all at once. Remember, the aim is to be a more mindful consumer. Wait until items are worn out or broken before replacing, and replace them gradually.
4 - Aim to go paper-free
The paperless office – and home – can be achieved if you take small steps. Change your preferences so all your providers send bills, statements and other notifications via email. Drop your newspaper or magazine subscription and opt for online subscriptions instead. This is another great money saver.
5 - Green up your commute
With many of us working from home some or all of the time, there’s less need for long commutes. If you do still need to make it to an office, consider using public transport (for at least part of your journey), or invest in a scooter, bike or eBike.
