How to get rid of e-waste sustainably

Did you know that in 2019, the UN estimated that over 22 million tonnes of small e-waste were produced worldwide?

In the spirit of International E-Waste Day on October 14, here are some simple tips to help you dispose of those small electrical devices we no longer use but keep in drawers and cupboards or often toss in the general waste bin.

Old mobile phones: It’s great to have an old phone as a back-up but realistically they get relegated to a junk drawer and forgotten about. Luckily Apple has a GiveBack program so you can trade in your old phone for a new one to help offset the payment, or you can also request a voucher.

Batteries: Check out your local council or recycling center to dispose of used batteries without harming the environment. Some supermarkets now have recycling centers too where you can drop your batteries off.

Televisions, monitors and computers: First of all, ask yourself if you really need an upgrade. If you do, offer your old TV or computer to your local Buy Nothing Facebook group, or to a charity if it’s in good condition.

Of course, reducing is better if you can do it – not to mention cheaper. Extend the life of your electronics by buying a case, keeping devices clean and avoiding overcharging your battery. Buy environmentally friendly electronics labelled with an Energy star.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.” —Jane Goodall
