Steps you can take to reduce climate change as an individual

Posted by on

There are many factors that impact climate change. Most of which we usually look at from the macro perspective rather than the micro perspective. When we think about deforestation, we think about big businesses coming into forests and bulldozing away trees for various reasons. We are challenging you to think about how your lifestyle choices impact the demand for such practices and what we can do on an individual level to make changes at a larger scale.

There are numerous human activities that make changes to the Earth’s atmosphere and impact our climate, some of these include burning fossil fuels, animal agriculture, deforestation and urbanisation. The Earth’s average surface temperature is gradually rising, rainfall patterns are changing, snow and ice cover is plummeting, and sea levels are rising. These factors all come together when we discuss climate change which is often referred to simply as ‘global warming’.

Ask yourself, what activities do I undertake and what products do I use that contribute to deforestation, urbanisation, animal agriculture and burning fossil fuels? Here we offer you a list of things that you can do to lower your footprint and keep your lifestyle green and sustainable:

  • Avoid purchasing products made from trees and plastic
  • Go waste-free and avoid all single use products and packaging
  • Consuming less = wasting less!
  • Reduce your intake of animal products such as meat, seafood, eggs and dairy. Pay particular attention to your consumption of beef and dairy as cattle are the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions from animal agriculture
  • Do not waste food, purchase only what you need and avoid having extras that end up being thrown away
  • Grow your own food where possible, such as a veggie patch, fruit trees and herb gardens
  • When choosing products that are a necessity, select the most energy efficient options available. You can easily locate an energy efficiency star label on most appliances

  • Plant trees around your home and community
  • Conserve energy wherever possible by turning off lights and unplugging appliances not in use
  • Replace light globes with more energy efficient options
  • Insulate your home to reduce the need for air-conditioning
  • Wash clothes in cold water and hang instead of tumble dry
  • Ride a bike, take public transport, car pool or walk instead of driving where possible
